Belt Tensioner

Keeps the belt from slipping and moving around violently when running between pulleys. Usually consists of bearings or bushings that roll on the back of the belt (the side with no teeth) and supplies enough tension to keep the belt running smoothly. Because belts tend to stretch over time, most belt tensioners are adjustable to help take up some of the slack that is created by aging belts.
